This calendar lists activities that you can do with your child. Each is designed to increase your child’s pre-reading skills.  When you complete an activity, please put a letter on that day to indicate how you perceive the effectiveness of that activity.

 

E=Excellent     G=Good     F=Fair     P=Poor

August 1

Hug your child. Tell him a story about when he was a baby.

 

August 2

Pick a familiar tune. Add your own words and sing a back and forth conversation with your child.

 

August 3

Make up a story with your child about her favorite stuffed animal.

 

August 4

Ask your child to say words that rhyme with his name. Nonsense words count too- Matt, cat, rat, tat.

 

August 5

Make a big name sign with your child. Sit with her and print the letters of her name.

Let her decorate the sign and hang it in her room.

 

August 6

Play basketball with a large ball that is soft and a laundry basket.

 

August 7

Talk about different feelings with your child. Sing “If You’re Happy and You Know It”.

 

August 8

Hug your child. Tell her why she is such an important member of your family.

 

August 9

Sing the “ABC” song with your child.

 

August 10

As you read with your child, point to the words that start with the same letter as his name.

Example: Ben, box, bee, bat.

 

August 11

Say 3 words- big, hat, wig. Ask your child which two sound the same.

 

August 12

Give your chills a magazine or newspaper. Circle a letter on the page.

Have him circle the matching letters.

 

August 13

Draw a few rows of straight lines all the way across a paper.

Give your child some safety scissors and ask her to cut on the lines.

 

August 14

Doing laundry together is a great activity.

Talk about what you’re doing and let your child help sort the darks and lights.

 

August 15

Give your child a big hug and tell him that you will love him forever.

 

August 16

Cut out the center of a plastic disposable lid. Tie on ribbon or yarn all around the circle as streamers. Dance and play to music.

 

August 17

Have fun clapping out the syllables of people’s names that you know.

 

August 18

Make up sentences together that have a lot of rhyming words. The frog and the dog sat on a log.

 

August 19

Go on a hunt around your house for objects that all start with the same letter.

Purchase a box of multicolored cereal. Ask your child to sort out the colors.

 

August 20

Make sock puppets with your child. Use the toe end. Draw, glue, or sew on eyes, a mouth etc.

Put on a show.

 

August 21

Hug your child! Do you know her favorite color? If not, ask her.

 

August 22

Sing “The Wheels On The Bus” with your child. Make up your own verses and actions.

 

August 23

When reading with your child, ask questions that let you know whether he knows what you’re reading.   

 

August 24

Place a few objects on the table (block, crayon, jar).

I like to wish upon a star and keep my pennies in a ______.

 

August 25

Find some chalk. Go outside and draw on the sidewalk together. Practice some ABCs

 

August 26

Tape a few crayons together. Use them to make fun designs on paper.

 

August 27

Teach your child a chore that you can do together.

Talk about how it is done and help your child to learn how.

 

August 28

Hug your child. Give her an Eskimo kiss.

 

August 29

Fill glasses or jars with different amounts of water. Use a spoon to tap on the glasses.

Listen to the music and talk about the different sounds.

 

August 30

Find something that you enjoy reading. Let your child choose a book he enjoys looking at.

Spend time together “reading” separately.
